One of the most surprising lessons I learned before turning 30 is that moving far away from home can strengthen your bonds with family and friends.
As most American teenie boppers do at 18, I moved out after high school and went to Phoenix to go to school. In hindsight, this wasn't THAT far from home, and I might've taken for granted how close I actually was for those 4 years. After college, I moved ALL the way to the East Coast, not knowing a soul. This move was both exciting and daunting, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life.
Being so far away made me appreciate the times we do get to spend together and pushed us to make the effort to stay connected through phone calls, texts, video chats, and planned visits. This physical separation strengthened our relationships, making our interactions more meaningful and cherished. Additionally, being away from my familiar support system pushed me to become more independent and taught me to value quality over quantity in relationships.
Being 2000 miles away now feels like being just down the street, as our bonds have grown stronger and more meaningful.
In conclusion, moving away from home has not only made me more independent but also brought me closer to my family and friends. The distance has truly strengthened our bonds and made our relationships more meaningful."
